Bird Forest

Therapists use this activity to work shoulder flexion and encourage postural alignment

Overview

  • Use for ADL training and processing as well as upper extremity strengthening and endurance.

REAL activities are designed to aid with pain therapy, cognition, core and balance and upper body mobility

Free Birds

Patient uses functional movements to pick up a bird and place it into a nest. Optional setting uses pronation and supination to pick up and place the bird into nests.

Uses pronation and supination by having the patient virtually pick up objects and put them away

Bird Match

Patient uses functional movement to pick up a bird and place it into a nest with its matching-colored ribbon. Optional setting uses pronation and supination to pick up and place the bird into nests.

Nest Hop

Patient uses functional movements to pick up and place a bird into a series of nests under a time limit. Optional setting uses pronation and supination to pick up and place the bird into nests.

Focus

Functional movement patterns, upper extremity range of motion, strengthening, and endurance
While the patient is in the seated position, the therapist assists with games and activities

Physical

  • Engage trunk stability, forearm pronation and supination, shoulder abduction/adduction, smooth movement, dynamic reaching

  • Augment activity by adding diagonals or stress balls to squeeze once bird is successfully placed in a nest

  • Augment activity by having patient reach across their midline to place a bird in a nest opposite to the side of the hand holding the bird for transverse adduction

  • Incorporate Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) patterns

Cognitive

  • Test command response, sustained attention, object recognition, left/right discrimination
